How does Japan eSIM work?

After purchasing an ETravelSim product, customers will receive a unique QR code via email. This code is provided to the registered email ID used during the purchase. The email will also contain detailed instructions on how to install the product. To begin using the product, scan the QR code.

How will I get the QR code for my purchase?

Once you have booked the eSIM, you can expect to receive the QR code to your registered email ID almost instantly. This will come with a guide for installing the QR code, SMDP address, and activation code. Once the QR code is installed, you are good to go.

What is an eSIM?

An eSIM, or embedded Subscriber Identity Module, is a virtual SIM card integrated into devices like smartphones and smartwatches. Can I use hotspot or tethering with the Japan eSIM?

Yes. On fixed-data plans, hotspot uses your data allowance. Unlimited plans include hotspot data: 6 GB on the 7-day plan, 14 GB on the 15-day plan and 30 GB on the 30-day plan, so you can share with a laptop or travel partner.

Which network does the ETravelSim Japan eSIM use?

KDDI (au), one of Japan's three major carriers. The ETravelSim Japan eSIM is a native KDDI profile, not a roaming overlay, so you don't need to turn on Data Roaming. You get 5G in major cities and airports, with 4G LTE across the Shinkansen network and rural Japan.

When should I install the Japan eSIM, and when does validity start?

Install it at home on Wi-Fi before you fly: scan the QR code, label the line "Japan" and leave it switched off. Validity starts when the eSIM first connects to a Japanese network, not when you buy or install it. After landing, turn the line on and set it as your mobile data line — you'll be connected within 2–5 minutes.

How much data do I need for a trip to Japan?

Most tourists use 0.5–1 GB a day for maps, messaging and social media. 5 GB suits a 1-week trip, 10 GB a 2-week trip, and 20 GB two weeks with daily video. For streaming, remote work or hotspot use, choose an unlimited plan.

Does the ETravelSim Japan eSIM work on iPhone?

Yes, the ETravelSim Japan eSIM works on every iPhone from XR onwards, including iPhone 11 to iPhone 17, iPhone 16e, iPhone 17e, iPhone Air, iPhone 18 Pro / 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo and iPhone SE (2020/2022). Will it work at Narita / Haneda / Kansai airport?

Yes. KDDI has full 5G coverage at Narita (NRT), Haneda (HND), Kansai (KIX), and New Chitose (CTS). Your ETravelSim Japan eSIM connects automatically within 2–5 minutes of switching on cellular data after landing. Google Maps will be live as you walk to the train.

Does it cover Shinkansen tunnels?

Yes. You'll get 4G LTE across most of the Tokaido, Tohoku, Hokuriku and Sanyo Shinkansen routes, with brief signal drops in some of the longest mountain tunnels. Speeds resume as soon as you exit.

Does it work in rural Japan / Hokkaido / Okinawa?

Yes. KDDI covers all 47 prefectures of Japan including Hokkaido, Okinawa, Tohoku, and Kyushu. 5G is concentrated in cities and major towns. Rural areas, deep mountain regions, and smaller Okinawan islands fall back to 4G LTE, which stays fast enough for maps and messaging.

Is it 5G or 4G?

Both. The ETravelSim Japan eSIM delivers 5G on KDDI's network across Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Nagoya, Fukuoka, Sapporo, and most major Japanese cities. Outside 5G zones, it falls back to 4G LTE automatically. Your phone must be 5G-capable hardware to actually use the 5G layer.

Can I make calls or get a Japanese phone number?

No. The ETravelSim Japan eSIM is data-only — there is no Japanese mobile number and no incoming or outgoing voice calls or SMS. Use WhatsApp, FaceTime, Skype, Zoom, or Google Voice over data. Your home phone number stays active on your primary SIM throughout.

Will WhatsApp work?

Yes. WhatsApp uses internet data rather than the mobile number itself, so it works perfectly on the ETravelSim Japan eSIM. You keep your existing WhatsApp account tied to your home number, and the Japan eSIM simply provides the data connection for messages, calls, and media.

Will my home plan still work for calls / SMS?

Yes. Your home SIM stays active for calls and SMS on your normal home number while the ETravelSim Japan eSIM handles data. This dual-SIM setup is the main reason most international travelers choose an eSIM over a physical SIM — you don't lose your usual number.

How do I get the QR code after buying?

Your eSIM QR code is emailed to you instantly after payment, along with the SM-DP+ address, activation code and a step-by-step install guide. If the email doesn't arrive, check your spam folder. If it's still missing, contact ETravelSim support — average chat reply is under one hour.

What if my eSIM doesn't work in Japan?

Toggle Airplane Mode off and on, then check that the ETravelSim line is turned on and selected for mobile data. You don't need to turn on Data Roaming — the Japan eSIM is a native KDDI profile. If it still won't connect, message ETravelSim support — most issues are fixed in under 10 minutes.

Can I install the eSIM on more than one phone?

No. The Japan eSIM QR code is single-use. Once it's scanned and installed on a phone, it cannot be transferred to a different device, and it cannot be reinstalled if you delete it. Take a screenshot of the QR before scanning so you have an emergency backup.

What happens if I use all my data before my trip ends?

On fixed-data plans (1 GB to 50 GB) your connection stops once the allowance is used up. Existing eSIMs can't be recharged: to get more data, buy a new ETravelSim Japan eSIM and install it as a second eSIM on the same phone — most modern iPhones and Android phones hold several eSIM profiles. If you use a lot of data, an unlimited plan avoids this entirely.

Can I cancel and get a refund?

Yes, if you ask within 5 days of purchase. If you ordered by mistake or your phone is not eSIM-compatible, we refund the price minus a $5 fee (or the equivalent in your currency), as long as the eSIM has not been installed or used. If the problem is on our side, for example the QR code never arrived or the eSIM has a fault we cannot fix, you get a full refund with no fee. Approved refunds reach your original payment method within 15 days. Contact ETravelSim support with your order number to start a refund.

Is my phone unlocked? How do I check?

On iPhone: Settings → General → About → "Carrier Lock" should read "No SIM restrictions". On Android, settings vary by manufacturer. Phones bought outright or fully out of contract are usually unlocked. Carrier-locked phones cannot use any travel eSIM, including ETravelSim Japan.

Is it better than buying a SIM at the airport?

For most travelers, yes. Airport SIM counters require photo ID and queuing after a long flight. The ETravelSim Japan eSIM is installed at home before you fly, takes about 2 minutes to set up, and connects the moment you land.

What about pocket Wi-Fi rental?

Pocket Wi-Fi rental in Japan costs $5–$10 per day, requires airport pickup and drop-off, and is an extra device to charge and carry. An eSIM stays in your phone, has no pickup hassle, and works out cheaper per day on any trip longer than three days.

Does it work on the Apple Watch?

No. The ETravelSim Japan eSIM is designed for smartphones and tablets only. Apple Watch cellular requires a carrier-paired plan from your home network provider — travel eSIMs cannot be installed on the Apple Watch directly. Use your iPhone connection while you're in Japan instead.

Easy installation

Process to install esim was simple and instructions were clear. Installed the esim at home and turned it on once landed in Japan. Only needed to restart phone to make sure the esim worked properly. There were no issues with service in Osaka and Tokyo.

All in all recommended

It was easily installed, though it didn’t work right away. After checking the Mail I received I followed the instructions on the website, which were very helpful, so I managed to make it work within like 5-10min after arriving in Tokyo. Probably possible to install it perfectly fine right away, I just messed up.
I miss two things:
1. Some way to see how much data is left.
2. An convenient option to recharge the data plan, since I am here for a longer time.

All in all I can definitely recommend this Sim, after one month.

Good, but needs two improvements

Overall, I’m satisfied with the simplicity of this service. It would benefit from two additions: (1) a simple way to track data usage of any plan purchased, to enable user to assess which plan best fits needs (2) a simple calculation tool to help user assess if quitting regular telecoms provider’s travel plan in favour of this plan is worthwhile. Both are an invitation to radical transparency. Best of luck.
