If your travel eSIM isn't working, the cause is almost always a setting on your phone, not the eSIM itself. Check three things first: data roaming is on for the eSIM line, the eSIM is chosen as your mobile data line, and the line is switched on. Then turn airplane mode on for 15 seconds and off again. If you're still offline, work through the ten fixes below. Each one has the exact steps for iPhone and Android.

The short answer
  • Turn on data roaming for the travel eSIM. A travel eSIM connects to local partner networks abroad, so it needs roaming switched on. This doesn't add charges to your travel eSIM.
  • Set the eSIM as your mobile data line, so your phone stops trying to use your home SIM for data.
  • Check the eSIM line is turned on in your SIM settings.
  • Reconnect. Turn airplane mode on for at least 15 seconds, then off. If that doesn't work, restart your phone.
  • Never delete the eSIM to "start again". You may not be able to reinstall it. Contact support instead.

10 quick fixes for a travel eSIM that isn't working

Menu names vary a little between phone models and software versions. The paths below are for current iPhones, Samsung Galaxy phones and Google Pixel phones.

Fix 1: Turn on data roaming for your travel eSIM

This is the number one reason a travel eSIM shows signal but no internet. Your travel eSIM connects to partner networks in the country you're visiting, and your phone treats that as roaming. If data roaming is off on that line, your phone blocks the data.

iPhone

Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > tap your travel eSIM > turn on Data Roaming.

Android

Samsung: Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > turn on Data roaming.
Pixel: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > your travel eSIM > turn on Roaming.

Will this cost me money? Not on the travel eSIM. You've already paid for that data. The charges people worry about come from roaming on their home SIM, so keep data roaming switched off on your home line.

Fix 2: Choose the eSIM as your mobile data line

Your phone can only use one line for mobile data at a time. If it's still set to your home SIM, it will either use expensive roaming data or nothing at all.

iPhone

Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data > choose your travel eSIM.

Android

Samsung: Settings > Connections > SIM manager > Mobile data > choose your travel eSIM.
Pixel: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > Mobile data > choose your travel eSIM.

Fix 3: Make sure the eSIM line is switched on

Installing an eSIM doesn't always switch it on. Some phones also turn a line off after a software update or a SIM swap.

iPhone

Settings > Cellular > tap your travel eSIM > make sure Turn On This Line is on.

Android

Samsung: Settings > Connections > SIM manager > turn on the switch next to your eSIM.
Pixel: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > your travel eSIM > turn on Use SIM.

Fix 4: Toggle airplane mode, then restart

When you land, your phone may still be clinging to the last network it saw. Apple suggests turning airplane mode on for at least 15 seconds, then off, which forces your phone to search for networks again. If that doesn't work, restart the phone completely. This one fix solves a lot of "No Service" problems right after landing.

Fix 5: Check you're in a covered country and your plan is active

An eSIM that worked yesterday and stopped today has often just run out. Check how much data and how many days you have left. Most ETravelSim plans start their validity when you first connect in the destination country, so installing early is fine. But a plan for one country won't connect in the next one. If you're crossing borders, you need a regional plan such as the Europe eSIM.

Ran out of data? You don't need a new eSIM. Many ETravelSim plans can be recharged, so you can add data to the eSIM that's already on your phone.

Fix 6: Choose a network manually

Travel eSIMs usually work with more than one local network. Sometimes your phone locks on to a network that doesn't accept your eSIM, or a weak one. Choosing a network manually can fix this.

iPhone

Settings > Cellular > tap your travel eSIM > Network Selection > turn off Automatic > wait for the list and pick a network.

Android

Samsung: Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network operators > turn off Select automatically > pick a network.
Pixel: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > your travel eSIM > Network > pick a network.

If the first network doesn't connect, try the next one on the list. When you're back online, switch automatic selection back on, so your phone can move between networks as you travel.

Fix 7: Switch from 5G to LTE

5G is fast when it's strong, but at the edge of a 5G area your phone can keep jumping between 5G and 4G, and data stalls. Forcing LTE (4G) often gives a steadier connection.

iPhone

Settings > Cellular > tap your travel eSIM > Voice & Data > choose LTE.

Android

Samsung: Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network mode > choose an LTE option.
Pixel: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > your travel eSIM > Preferred network type > choose LTE.

Fix 8: Check the APN settings

The APN (access point name) tells your phone how to connect to mobile data. Most travel eSIMs set it automatically, so you'll rarely need to touch it. If support gives you an APN, or if the field is empty, enter it exactly as given, including capital letters.

iPhone

Settings > Cellular > tap your travel eSIM > Cellular Data Network.

Android

Samsung: Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Access Point Names.
Pixel: Settings > Network & internet > SIMs > your travel eSIM > Access point names.

Fix 9: Update your phone, then reset network settings

Install any waiting software update first. On iPhone, also check for a carrier settings update under Settings > General > About while you're on Wi-Fi. If data still won't work, reset your network settings. This clears saved Wi-Fi networks, Bluetooth pairings and mobile settings, but it doesn't remove your eSIM.

iPhone

Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings.

Android

Samsung: Settings > General management > Reset > Reset network settings.
Pixel: Settings > System > Reset options > Reset mobile network settings.

Careful: on the same iPhone screen there's an option called Delete All eSIMs. Don't tap it. On Android, avoid any reset option that mentions erasing eSIMs. Once an eSIM is deleted, you may not be able to install it again.

Fix 10: Contact ETravelSim support

If none of the above works, don't spend your holiday on it. ETravelSim has real people on support around the clock. To get it sorted fastest, send:

  • Your order number
  • Your phone model and where you are (country and city)
  • A screenshot of your Cellular or SIM settings screen
  • What you see: no signal, signal with no internet, or an error message

Email support@etravelsim.com or message the team on WhatsApp (+65 9236 1258). You can also go through the eSIM troubleshooting page.

eSIM won't install? Check these first

Installation problems are different from connection problems. If you see an error like "Cellular Plan Cannot Be Added", or nothing happens when you scan the QR code, one of these is usually the reason.

  • You're not online during setup. Your phone downloads the eSIM over the internet, so connect to Wi-Fi or use another line's data while you install it.
  • Your phone is carrier-locked. On iPhone, go to Settings > General > About and check that Carrier Lock says "No SIM Restrictions". If your phone is locked, ask your home carrier to unlock it.
  • Your phone doesn't support eSIM. Dial *#06#. If you see an EID number, your phone supports eSIM. Most iPhones from the XR and XS onwards, Google Pixel 3 and newer, and Samsung Galaxy S20 and newer do.
  • The QR code has already been used. A QR code usually installs the eSIM once. If you scanned it on another phone, contact support.
  • The scan screen closed too early. Activation takes a minute or two. Keep the screen open until your phone confirms the new line.

Things that look like a fault but aren't

Some things look broken but are just how travel eSIMs work. Before you contact support, check this list.

What you notice Why it happens
A roaming icon or "R" next to the signal Normal. Your travel eSIM connects through partner networks, and your phone labels that as roaming.
Unlimited data slows down in the evening ETravelSim unlimited plans include 4 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps until the allowance resets 24 hours later.
Hotspot won't share data Hotspot works on fixed-data plans but isn't available on unlimited plans.
You can't make normal calls on the eSIM Most travel eSIMs are data only. Call over WhatsApp, FaceTime or similar, and keep your home SIM on for normal calls and texts.
Your iPhone switched lines by itself With iOS 26 and later, iPhone can switch travel eSIMs on and off automatically. Check which line is set for Cellular Data.

Before your next trip: a 2-minute checklist

Most eSIM problems can be avoided before you leave home. Do this the day before you fly:

  • Install your eSIM at home on Wi-Fi, and give the line a clear name, such as "Travel".
  • Restart your phone once after installing it.
  • Save the QR code email somewhere you can open it offline.
  • When you land, switch on the travel line, set it for mobile data and turn on its data roaming.
  • Turn off data roaming on your home SIM, but leave the line on for calls and SMS codes.
  • Save the ETravelSim support email and WhatsApp number in your contacts.

Travel eSIM not working: FAQs

Why is my travel eSIM not working abroad?

The most common reasons are that data roaming is off on the eSIM line, the eSIM isn't selected as your mobile data line, or the line is switched off. Fix those, then turn airplane mode on for 15 seconds and off again.

Do I need to turn on data roaming for a travel eSIM?

Yes. Travel eSIMs connect through partner networks abroad, so data roaming must be on for the eSIM line. It doesn't add charges to your travel eSIM. Keep data roaming off on your home SIM to avoid roaming fees.

Why does my eSIM show signal but no internet?

Usually because data roaming is off for the eSIM, or your phone is still using your home SIM for mobile data. Turn on data roaming for the eSIM and set it as your mobile data line.

Why does my eSIM say No Service?

Check the eSIM line is switched on, then turn airplane mode on for at least 15 seconds and off, or restart your phone. If it still says No Service, choose a network manually in your phone's network selection settings.

Does resetting network settings delete my eSIM?

No. Reset Network Settings on iPhone, and the network reset options on Samsung and Pixel phones, clear Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and mobile settings but keep your eSIM installed. Avoid any option that says it deletes or erases eSIMs.

Can I reinstall a travel eSIM I deleted?

Often not, because a QR code usually installs an eSIM only once. Contact ETravelSim support with your order number, and they'll check whether the eSIM can be reissued.

Why is my unlimited eSIM so slow?

ETravelSim unlimited plans give you 4 GB a day at full speed, then 1 Mbps for the rest of the day. The full-speed allowance resets every 24 hours. If it's slow before you've used 4 GB, try switching from 5G to LTE or choosing another network.

Why won't my eSIM install?

Your phone needs an internet connection during setup, must be carrier-unlocked and must support eSIM. Also check the QR code hasn't already been used on another phone.

How do I contact ETravelSim support?

Email support@etravelsim.com with your order number, or message the team on WhatsApp at +65 9236 1258. Support is available 24/7.
